Founded in 2015 by Eric Vialatel, the Festival du Regard based in Cergy-Pontoise develops a new theme for each edition, bringing together around twenty artists in a different location each year, one not intended to host works of art.
Mall, old post office, office buildings where thus transformed in truly ephemeral museums, allowing the public, curious to discover these everyday spaces, to come in ever greater numbers. Amongst the hosted themes: Adolescences, Habiter, Voyages extraordinaires, Intime & Autofictions, Bonjour la Nuit !...
Photo wokshops, conferencs, screenings, school field trips, and portfolio readings punctuate the entire duration of the festival which takes place over two months in the fall. A call to applications to the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts of Paris Cergy allows students to show their work for the very first time. Numerous actions are taken locally, with residents of the social landlord Erigere, with the Talentiel school which hosts special education children, HP, etc.
The program developed by artistic directors Sylvie Hugues and Mathilde Terraube takes into account the territory and its history, combines well-known and lesser-known photographers, with an emphasis on the photographic medium and its materiality. Gallery-quality prints are favored with particular attention to framing, the presentation of the works as well as a scenography that respects the artist's approach but also the environment. The texts that accompany the hangings are written to be understood by all. Another original feature is that there is always a small place in the festival for 19th-century photography. Admission is free and a catalog, published by Filigranes, is offered to visitors.
